Dear Mary Lou,
Craig shared the news of Carol’s passing, and we were both in tears at the end of the call. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. It’s difficult to pen words, so I’ll tell you what I did. Craig mentioned doing something outdoors yesterday, so I tried to be with the family in that manner.
I drove to the lava flow near my house, where sky, water, earth, and fire meet. I hiked and thought of Carol. Especially meaningful were the young ferns poking through the lava—it takes about twenty-five years for this to occur, although some parts of the flow have been very recent. They remind me of Carol’s joy for life, her resiliency, poise, and beauty. On the way back to my car, the native Hawaiian ranger asked me if it helped my grief. I replied to her, “Yes, Mahalo (thank you), and Aloha.”
Aloha, dear Carol
