My memories of Carol are that she was warm, friendly, and so welcoming whenever I would come for a visit. And I remember her making the best homemade applesauce on the planet. We had it at a Thanksgiving Dinner I attended a long time ago. Hearing she had died took my breath away because I had been hearing of her recent improvements and was thrilled that she had been able to do so many of the things that she enjoyed. Not being able to attend the day’s activities at the Relay for Life, I thought walking, doing something that she would love, seemed an appropriate tribute to a lady who inspired many. I imagined my kids and I to be the Des Moines contingency of the Jazzy Walkers.
There was a new trail that just recently opened in Central Iowa called High Trestle Trail. The western entrance of the trail is about 20 miles north of West Des Moines, and I thought it would be the perfect setting for this occasion. The attraction to this trail is this amazing bridge that had been artistically enhanced using original rail trestles from a very long time ago.
So it’s to Carol that we dedicate today’s journey. It was invigorating and challenging and absolutely worth it.
